“For the most part, my photography has focused on creating clear and straightforward portraiture and photojournalism. More recently, however, I’ve considered how I might take the viewer with me to a deeper level⎯to create images that would provoke thoughtful interaction, emotion, and perhaps even new insight.

It was when I was introduced to dance and dance photography through Blake Beckham and Dance Truck that this idea began to take shape. Through the opportunities Dance Truck gave me, I realized how movement is used to tell story, create emotion, and call for a response in an audience. It was that understanding which led to my desire to use my images to pull the viewer into the movement, feeling, and story of the human form in motion. Viewers could see through my lens something they were unable to see with their own eyes—to experience the motion of dance in a way that was altogether different than how they had experienced it in the past.

All of this led to a collaborative project with Dance Truck, and these images⎯Portraits of Mystery⎯are the result.”

Fall is here! The leaves are changing, there’s a crisp chill in the air, and we can finally pull out those cozy sweaters that have been hiding in the back of the closet. It also means Christmas is around the corner!

Until recently, my photography has focused on creating clear and straightforward portraiture, but I want to go deeper. I want to create images that encourage the viewer to spend time discovering what the images are really about (what the subject matter really is). I want to focus on the mystery created by the motion of dance that often our human eye misses but the camera captures, while maintaining elements of the human form with the goal of pulling the viewer into the movement.
